Inspiration

I drew these two people, Daniel Fishel and Christine Goodman, as my inspiration for the 30-Day Drawing Challenge I'm doing on tumblr. It's very true that these two are heroes. I have my own reasons why I chose two people, but I think it's beside the point. It's important to have heroes, role models, cheeseburgers, among other things.

Blue Food

Did this for Blue Food.

Angel Eduardo, a friend, approached me about doing a poster for their next show on November 30 at Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ. I hadn't done a band poster before, so I thought it would be a good learning experience, balancing so many names. We both thought the graffiti approach would have been neat. It ended up being a good solution, I think, because of all the wordage. As you know, graffiti walls can be pretty messy; a collage of styles, chaotic, yet, beautiful in juxtaposition.

This is, of course, kind of chaotic and intense, but it's interesting to sit and look at. Enjoy.

Ronin

I think it's customary for illustrators to only post images of the artwork they do for magazines after the piece is published, but I think posting this cover I did for Instigatorzine 18 (which is released next month), is only good for both me and Instigatorzine. I entered this illustration into the Society of Illustrators Annual, Illustrators 55, along with the artwork I posted yesterday. Essentially, I submitted both pieces to Creative Quarterly 30, however, I didn't have this version completed at the time, and I gave an earlier render of "Ronin."

I was expanding the original version, a commission for Felix Duran, a friend and supporter of IZ, into the cover for Instigatorzine 18.

Oh, you forgot? I run this thing called Instigatorzine. I'll say it again: Instigatorzine. It's a mouthful, but it's pretty easy. Instigatorzine. INSTIGATORZINE.

Tales of Caution: Portraits

What did I tell you? One hour.

This illustration is of... oh I'm sure you know by now if you've been following this blog for a while and for some reason come back for my return.

I was thinking of doing a series of these portraits, highlighting several characters from the Tales of Caution project. It's one of many things I have planned, but I think I want to focus on making the actual comic, too.

One step at a time, right?

Doing some other work. For an independent film this time. It's a different pace, certainly. Especially while trying to balance everything at Instigatorzine. 

The film is called "Last Breath." It details the journey of a man who learns a lot of about himself through a terrible burden. That's how I interpreted it, anyway. The script was solid, and I'm looking forward to a solid film. I've uploaded poster comps below.

I'm not the best at design, but I do like simplicity. Of course, there will probably be more on the official poster later on. Like credit for the cast and crew. We'll see how it goes!

"Snip-Snip" final

 So, I guess I should finally show you how this thing came around. Of course, it's not hard to guess. Sketches, reference, drawings, final. Yes, in that order.

The references get kinda kooky. I usually don't have anyone to pose for me, so I end up using myself. My references tend to be pretty funny from my experience. Enjoy.

This one will be in the PROGRESSION exhibition at Art House Productions in Jersey City, NJ, opening tonight! This is also what I'm entering to the upcoming illustration contests from CMYK, 3x3, and AI-AP.

Martin Wittfooth

I met Martin Wittfooth this summer at 3x3 event, Nuts & Bolts. I was part of a group that visited his studio in Brooklyn, NY. All the paintings he was working on were magical. At the end of Nuts & Bolts, I went out with Wittfooth, Matt Rota and other artists and professionals.What a fun time!

In December, Martin Wittfooth will be the featured artist in Instigatorzine, Vol. 13! Until then, check out his first solo show, "The Passions,"  in New York City at Lyons Wier Gallery.

Way to Sleeping Child: Girl in the Water

A short, sneak peek into the next issue of Instigatorzine, Vol. 12. I really enjoyed doing the spots for this short prose. There were chunks of imagery to work from, a lot of it, very interesting. 

Deserters

So, usually, I have sketches up with these, but I can't seem to find them. I draw on anything really, so it could be scribbled on a copy of The New York Times for all I know. Anyway, here we go:

 Still wasn't sure which type layout and color looked better. I tried a couple of different colors, but there was still a conflict. Would have liked more time to experiment, but these are all done on deadline. -_-
